Introduction

Food and drinks are an important part of celebrations in many cultures. Now after thinking about breakfast and investigating cultural breakfasts around the world, it is time to celebrate the importance of breakfast - a key to healthy living. In this Celebration activity, you will be working both individually as well as in small groups. It is important to keep in the front of your mind the 5 Fun Ways Wheel and especially the EVERYDAY theme and the different food groups when planning your creative breakfast recipe.

Task

As a class, your task is to plan a breakfast meal and a physical activity, which links to a celebration or culture. See the EdNA Online Australian Schools Calendar for ideas about special events and click on Calendar for Australian Schools.

You will first need to work individually to create a breakfast menu item and an everyday physical activity. The class can then gather the ideas and decide on a class breakfast celebration. It would be nice to invite a special guest to attend and celebrate with you. It could be a parent or local sporting representative or council member. Remember, you will need to allow sufficient time to invite your guest to attend. Also you will need to decide what you will do while the guest is visiting your class/school.

Steps in planning the breakfast celebration:

1 Working as an individual:

Plan the breakfast meal and physical activity that links to the celebration.
Hints:

The breakfast meal should involve both food and drink
Use information from your own family experience or cultural background if possible
Find out as much as you can about the following
    - Ingredients
    - Preparation of your breakfast
    - Nutrition value
    - Special types of everyday activities that relate to the culture you have chosen and write this down
Draw or find a picture of your menu item to share with others
See if you can also find a description of the physical activity that you have chosen
It is also important to consider food safety when planning your meal

Make use of the nutrition information about food groups and serve sizes from the previous section. You don't have to create the menu, just share your idea and explain why it should be part of the class menu.

Extension activity

If you want to have a go at making your healthy breakfast item, ask and see if you can make it at home and then tell the class what your family thought about it. Remember to consider food safety when preparing your meal.

2 Working as a class:

Share your ideas with other class members. You could do this by group discussion, oral presentations and or viewing the plans of others.

Vote on the items you want in the class breakfast celebration menu and on which physical activity to include.

You may like to consider some of the following when making your choice:

Which part of the 5 Fun Ways Wheel does the breakfast meal and physical activity fit under?
Does the menu have representation of 2 food groups?
Nutritional value of the breakfast meal (think about the fat, carbohydrate, protein etc.. content of the meal - food labels should have this information)?
  Cost of ingredients?
Ease of preparation - are the ingredients in or out of season?
Enjoyability of the meal like taste and flavours?
Representation of Australia's cultural mix/relevance to the celebration?
Is any equipment needed for the physical activity?
Appropriate clothing for the physical activity?
Space required for the physical activity?
Physical activity level (easy vs vigorous) and is the physical activity inclusive (difficulty level - will everyone in the class be capable of participating in the activity)?
  Are there any safety considerations?
Is it an activity that you could do everyday?
  Food safety considerations?

You now need to make some decisions as a class. Consider the following when making your choice:

Will you make some of the menu items in the classroom or bring them from home?
Will you choose from a number of breakfast cereals?
Will you involve parents and friends?
Will you create some special breakfast fruit juice drinks using recipes from the weblinks?
Will you use the classroom or a special room for the celebration?
How will you involve the special guest if you invite one?
Where will you do the physical activity component?
Are there any safety considerations for the physical activity and food preparation?

Decide how you are going to promote your breakfast celebration event. Use the computer to create an A4 menu poster to display in your class and around the school to promote a healthy breakfast.

Include in this some information about the physical activity you are planning

Remember to be creative in using the computer - use graphics, give the poster a heading, make the poster balanced

Experiment with colour, font and styles
Try to provide a sense of the celebration linked to the breakfast menu
