Introduction to the Learning Quest

Delivery:

This Learning Quest, if completed in full, will take approximately 3 weeks. If the competition is included it will take four weeks. However this Learning Quest is flexible and can be broken down into the different sections. As an example, you may want to use the section called Let's Celebrate and nothing else. That is fine. However, if you do this then the assessment rubric will need to be altered.

You may need to start this Learning Quest with a discussion on the importance of breakfast. Talk about such things as why being active and eating healthy foods everyday is important for good health and fitness.

Ask questions like:

What did you have for breakfast this morning?
What is your favourite breakfast menu?
Is your breakfast different on the weekends to during the week? Why?
How do you feel if you miss breakfast?

Visit the websites provided to gather and build your knowledge about nutrition, the 5 food groups, physical activity, breakfast and much more.

The Everyday Habits - Breakfast and Physical Activity Learning Quest assists' students to explore the benefits of breakfast and everyday physical activity, as well as explore what others eat for breakfast everyday.

This Learning Quest has eight sections including About, Let's get started, Daily Diary, Around the World, Let's Celebrate, What have I discovered?, Competition. Each of these sections are explained further in the 'Learning Quest Parts' section.

During the Learning Quest students will work individually, as a class, in small brainstorming and sharing groups (3 - 4) and larger groups (5 - 6) depending on the complexity of the celebration activities. It is up to the teacher how students work together and with whom. You may like to do a mixture of things eg. Let students choose who they work with, choose a number at random, table groups etc.

The Learning Quest does have some expectations that students will be using a computer for some of the time. If you do not have computers in the classroom, please make sure that the computing room is booked for the times you are doing the Learning Quest. You may like to bookmark this Learning Quest and the Kids Health and Fitness website, to save time on the computer.

The main aims of the Learning Quest are for students to learn more about:

The 5 Fun Ways to Health and Fitness, in particular the EVERYDAY theme
  Healthy eating
The importance of eating breakfast and being active everyday
Developing and promoting a healthy lifestyle

Students will learn about cultural diversity and celebrations. So it is important that students spend as much time planning, discussing, practising, in the classroom, working on the computer and also outside.
