  Let’s Write

It is now time to start collecting information, taking notes of what you have, or learnt in the other stages of the Learning Quest. Talk to people, ask questions, take photos, find news clippings …

Start your news article by writing a plan. This plan template may help you.
What is the main idea(s), issue, what is the title, are you including quotes, remember to include important dates, relevant people that are affected by the article, names of any organisations mentioned in your research, conclusion (20 – 30 words which clearly states why you wrote this article, leaving your reader with a strong sense of the message you want them to get from your point of view.)

Keep these things in mind:

Main messages
  Catchy title/headline
What sort of article – lead (main articles - 250 words), smaller article (50 – 100 words), an advertisement?
Bylines (reporter’s name printed above his or her story)
  Images
  Layout
The date, day and place the article has been written
Remember to include the author’s name

Also use the ‘Write All About It Newspaper’ website, which gives student support in traditional structure of news writing. The main concerns are with the 5Ws and the H (who did what, when, where, why and how). Find out more at:

Have you now got a draft article?

You will be swapping your article with two (2) other people to read and review. Your teacher will help to choose what two articles you will review. Give encouragement to the junior journalists.

What do you like about their articles?
  What could they improve?
Are they helping … spread the word about New Ways?

Once you have reviewed two (2) other articles and you have your article back with comments from classmates ask yourself:

Do you want to modify/change your article to improve it?
Revisit your article and do a final version ready for publishing
