  Introduction

Food doesn’t just appear! Someone has to grow, pick, sell, prepare, organise and cook it.

Being involved in the different roles and responsibilities in food preparation provides great opportunities to be with friends and learn other skills.

There are lots of new ways that you can be involved in food and food preparation!

  Research

As a class, consider and list all the different roles and responsibilities undertaken or involved with food and food preparation. Think about the growers, manufacturers, cooks, kitchen hands, menu planner, supervisor or any other jobs required to ensure that we have a range of food and new ways to try foods.

As a class, discuss the important responsibilities of the different food roles, record any new findings in your Learning Log.

  What Could We Create?

Your task is to work in small groups of three (3) or four (4) (your teacher will help you form these groups) and work together on how and what new recipe/food you could create with the following:

Banana
  Orange
  Sultanas
  Milk
  Toothpicks

Decide what could be made from these products and how you will make it and who will do what role. You only have one (1) lesson to prepare and plan and one (1) lesson to create and evaluate.

During the process of planning, creating menus, preparing food and serving each group member must take on at least two (2) different roles.

  Discussion

In your groups, discuss the following:

How did you enjoy planning, organising and implementing your own new foods?
Did you find that you were good at one of the particular roles?
Did you find a particular role challenging?
Do you have a better understanding of some roles with food?
Importantly, did you find a new way of being involved with food?

Record your thoughts in your Learning Log.
