  About

The Occasional Carnival Learning Quest assists students to explore a range of special events like a sports day or swimming carnival or birthday or festival. They will learn about occasional activities and the importance of preparing safely for these.

It is important for students to get a balance between everyday and occasional foods and physical activities. Students will learn treats are ok occasionally, when part of a balanced diet, which is full of everyday foods. Students also need to do more energetic activity that makes them ‘huff and puff’ regularly.

This Learning Quest has stages including introduction, special event, energy balance, what happens, carnival recommendations, what have I discovered and teacher notes. Each of these stages are explained further in the ‘Learning Quest Parts’ section in the teacher notes.

The Learning Quest does have some expectations that students will be using a computer for some of the time. If you do not have computers in the classroom, make sure that the computing room is booked for the times you are doing the Learning Quest. You may like to bookmark this Learning Quest and the 5 Fun Ways to Health and Fitness website, to save time on the computer.

The main aims of the Learning Quest are for students to learn more about:

What are occasional activities and foods
How are occasional foods and activities different to everyday ones
Explore the importance of safe preparation for an occasional physical activity
Learning about what happens to their bodies
To reflect on what student found and make healthy, realistic and safe choices
To use a range of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) skills to support research, communication and operational tasks.

  Delivery

This Learning Quest, if completed in full, will take approximately three (3) weeks. However this Learning Quest is flexible and can be broken down into the different stages. For example, you may decide to just look at the special event, energy balance and what happens to the body, which will take about two (2) weeks. However, if you do this then the assessment rubric will need to be altered.

=  The start of a new stage of the Occasional Carnival Learning Quest
=  A student task. The rest of the information is to support or to help students do the task
   =  Steps within a task

During the Learning Quest students will work individually, in pairs, small groups and as a whole class depending on the complexity of the activities. It is up to the teacher how students work together and with whom. However we have suggested what we think is the most effective way of working with a task within the Learning Quest. You may like to do a mixture of things eg. let students choose who they work with, choose a number at random, table groups, sports teams etc.

An Internet Site Record Sheet has been included as an option for you to use with students. This will help record the different sites they visit and how useful the websites are.

  Making a Start

You may need to start this Learning Quest with a discussion on such things as:

What do you think is meant by occasional activity and occasional food?
What events and activities can you think of that are occasional?
What are some of the foods and activities you choose everyday?
What are some of the differences between occasional to everyday activities you do and foods you eat?

Visit the websites given to gather and build you and your students’ understanding about the importance of a food, physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Encourage students to share information and explore ways to be involved.
