Introduction

For this task you are going to be a Sports Dietitian for a day. Do you know what a dietitian does? You will be using your developed understanding of the importance of physical activity, nutrition, body image, 5 Fun Ways Wheel and the importance of variety to give suggestions and recommendations.

It is a good idea before you start the scenarios to find out more about what a dietitian and sport dietitian are. Look at the myfuture website: http://myfuture.edu.au/ and do a search for dietitian in the occupations section to find out more.

Dietitians are experts in human nutrition and they advise people about the types of foods they should eat. They help people select foods to improve their health and to treat some illnesses and diseases. A sports dietitian has additional knowledge and understanding of the important role nutrition plays in helping people perform their best in sport. Some of the roles of a dietitian are to:

Help people choose foods that will help keep them healthy
Provide nutrition information and advice to food companies
Develop education resources (such as brochures) for the community and food companies
Provide nutrition information and advice to canteens on how they can provide healthy foods
Help people plan activity into their daily routines
Conduct research about food and health

Task

1. You are going to make some recommendations as a sports dietitian, that will bring about some change in some different situations.

You will be working either individually or in small groups to investigate and make recommendations from a range of scenarios. Scenarios are situations where you can choose a role, investigate it and even act it out. This helps you understand the situation better.

You may use the working style of 1, 2, 4. Start the task by yourself. Share with 1 other person (2) and then share with another group of 2 (4). Talk to your teacher on how you will be working.

Choose from:

Changes

The School Canteen has a limited variety of healthy snacks or meal options for students. The Canteen Manager does not want to make any changes.
Your task: You need to convince both the school canteen committee and the school council that change is necessary.
Hint: Think about variety and nutrition.

Healthy Meal Plan

A student has been selected for a special school sporting event. The parents want help in developing a healthy meal plan for a week for an active child.
Your task: design a meal plan for a week.

Your task: Plan a variety of fun, cool activities to help Jess move off the couch.
Hint: Think about simple activities to start with (both indoors and outdoors).

Local Hazards and Risks

Students at the local school are not allowed to go to the park or sports centre because of concerns about their safety.
Your task: Identify potential hazards and risks for young people for your local area. Brainstorm strategies for improving the safety in your community. Present to the local school and community council.
Hint: Think about your local area and potential safety concerns. You may want to invite the local police or council representative to attend a meeting at your school.

Snack Attack

The school has banned snacks from the canteen, gym and for local excursions. Brainstorm a large range and variety of healthy snack options for kids.
Your task: Create a report and presentation for the local school and student council to convince them that snacks can be healthy.
Hint: think about the 5 Fun Ways Wheel and the 5 Food groups.

A student has shared with you their feelings at being left out and not involved in fun and group activities at school.
Your task: How would you respond to this student to help them towards feeling happy or good about themselves?
Hint: Think about likes, friends, family, small group activities.

Out and About

The Local Council is worried about the latest statistics on youth involvement in recreational activities and use of the facilities.
Your Task: Compose a letter to the Council with your ideas about what they could do to better promote the value of a variety of healthy activities in the community.

  Reflection

Many of the scenarios have asked for recommendations as a sports dietitian. Revisit your scenario, however this time be yourself. Would you make the same recommendations?

The world is full of all kinds of different people, and you want to be unique and special - not the same as somebody else. The most important thing is to keep smiling, have fun, be happy the way you are. Variety is important.
